Dengue fever is a disease caused by one of a number of viruses that are carried by mosquitoes. These mosquitoes then transmit the virus to humans. There is no treatment available to shorten the course of dengue fever.

I came back from visiting my officemate at Ampang Puteri hospital this afternoon. He was admitted to the hospital after what was thought as a mild fever turned into severe symptoms – high temperature, whole body ache, and uncontrollable body shaking, among others. With his blood pallets count dropped considerably for the past few days, the signs are clearly indicating that he might be ill with dengue.

It is scary to think that a small mosquito could have caused such a dangerous virus infection. It could not be helped that our equatorial weather with it’s abundance of rain is the perfect setup for mosquito breeding ground. Lots of other factors contributed further to the increase of dengue cases in Malaysia. While we cannot completely eradicate the problem, we could pro-actively take actions that could limit the spread of the disease, by ensuring that there are no mosquito breeding grounds near our vicinity, for example.

I do hope he will get well soon. It is sad to see a very cheerful person that I’ve known to be on the hospital bed, in agony and pain from the sickness that he never asked for.

Yesterday’s birthday dinner at Andalus was awesome, with good friends and good food.

The bad thing about yesterday: I gained 0.3 kg from the heavy Beef Mandi, as what my Weight Watcher program reported. It looks like I need to work the extra run, or the extra workout at the gym today. :)

I am guessing that I am slowly turning into a health freak. Or rather, to be precise, I am trying to make do with my new year resolution – to have a nice-looking body, enough lean muscles to show-off with body-hugging shirts that I have been keeping. Pardon the vanity moment since that’s what my theme of the year is – to look fabulous in my own body. :D

With that in mind, I will be recording my health progress on this site… and we shall see how long shall I last with this new year resolution. Stay tuned!

This is a quote that I overheard in the office.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away. But the doctor is sooooo handsome, that the apple had to go away.

Now that’s what you will less expect from a corporate, serious environment that I am in. It makes me smile. It makes me wonder if I should rethink my apple-for-diet program. On a serious note, apples are good for health and kids are encouraged to take it as part of their daily meal plan.

But I will not be getting any iPod, iPhone, iWhatever in the near future even if it will keep the doctor away.

The Swine Flu is here. The Health Ministry today confirmed the first case.

This made Malaysia the 36th country to be affected by the virus.

Should we be worry? Yes, we should. Should we panic? No, we shouldn’t. The government is taking, and has taken, the necessary measure to protect public health. Therefore there is no reason to be panic.

Let us pray that this illness shall pass away without any sacrifice in our country.

I call it by a name that is easy to remember, and as easy to relate to.

Hence, to me it isĀ  “Swine Flu”. Let others call it by any other names out there: the politically-correct H1N1 Virus, the geographically-savvy Mexican Flu, the other geo-savvy North American Flu, the straight-to-the-point Pig Flu, the in-denial Eurasian Flu, the drama-queen Deadly Flu.

What’s in a name, if it just to confuse us.

Let us not get tangled in this name business and concentrate our effort in mitigating the spread of the disease.
